Salvation Army 614 Corps Community Worship Center

Birmingham Churches and Their Cornerstones 74

Many due not realize that the Salvation Army is a worshiping community. I am tempted to call it a denomination, but in its current movement it states that it is a “movement” that is “an an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church.” In Birmingham it erected a community worship center at 2410 8th Avenue North in 1967. (This section of 8th Avenue was renamed Reverend Abraham Woods Boulevard in 2008.)

The cornerstone includes the crest of the Salvation Army at the top, but the metal banner that said “The Salvation Army” has been removed. Interestingly, while the original Salvation Army crest featured a crown at the top, in the United States here, as other places in the United States, it was replaced by an eagle. The stone reads “Dedicated to the Glory of God and the Enrichment of Mankind.”

In 2016, the army’s Birmingham Area Command, began consolidating its activities in a new “center of hope” on the site of the old Lewis Elementary School adjacent I-65 at Finely Boulevard. This building is no longer owned by the army, but has belonged to Jefferson County since January 2000.
