Birmingham Churches and their Cornerstones 117
Shades Mountain Baptist Church is near Samford University and very popular with students and some faculty and staff. It is commonly known simply as “Shades.” (This despite at least three other congregations in the vicinity that share this part of their name.) Shades was originally White’s Chapel Baptist Chruch and was founded in 1911. It took its present name when it moved to its present site in 1926. That building was remodled in 1953 and then as the newly formed City of Vestavia Hills continued to grow, it was replaced in 1963.
That building featured a tall rectangular tour like the nearby Vestavia Hills Methodist Church. But while the Methodist church continued to find its 1964 building suitable to its needs, the Baptists opened a new 3,500-seat worship center in 1989. That addition is not marked by exterior cornerstones.

Map of Posts in this Project
Each site in this project is mapped below. Clicking on an icon will bring up a box with a link to the post on the site. Please use it to browse the collection.
The color and shape of the location markers indicate the character of the cornerstones at each site. Stones like these with more than one name on them are light red. When there are multiple stones, the icon contains a square. If there is more than one stone at the site a shape is used. Click here for full information on the icons.
