Norwood Methodist Episcopal Church, South / Norwood Seventh-day Adventist Church

Birmingham Churches and their Cornerstones 96

Norwood was developed as garden suburb of Birmingham beginning in 1910. While the name might suggests its location and ambiance (“the woods on the north side of town”), it was also named for the developer’s friend Sidney Norwood, who was mayor of West End from 1900 to 1910.

According to the cornerstone Norwood Methodist Episcopal Church, South was established at the neighborhood’s beginning, in 1909 by Rev. R. E. Tyler. Its handsome, Early Christian Revival church was erected in 1921 as 1223 31st Street North. The congregation merged with Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church in 1977 and the building became the home of Norwood Seventh-day Adventist Church, later that congregation also closed. As of this writing, the site is owned by Found Properties LLC.
