Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, Rosedale

Birmingham Churches and Their Cornerstones 100

Bethel AME Church was founded in 1888, just one year after its neighbor, Union Missionary Baptist Church, in what is now the Rosedale section of Homewood. As the various stones in its current, 1950 building suggest, it has had several buildings during its history. The current one was begun in 1950 and completed in 1957.

All photos taken May 4, 2024.

Where as Union Missionary Baptist still has residences on one side of it. Bethel A.M.E. is completely surrounded by commercial properties, It presides over them from its hillside site.

The color and shape of the location markers indicate the character of the cornerstones at each site. Stones like these, with multiple names, are represented by red markers. When, as here, there are multiple stones, the marker includes a square. Click here for full information on the markers.
