Lake Highland Baptist Church

Birmingham Churches and their Cornerstones 124

Lake Highland Baptist Church was organized in 1927 in the North East Lake neighborhood of Birmingham Alabama. It erected this lovely local stone building in 1941 and added several units on to its back side until it stretched from 6th Avenue North to 5th Avenue North along 82nd Street.

The block-long expansion is a similar story to Lakewood Baptist Church about a mile to south, but while Lakewood is still open. Lake Highland closed and sold its building earlier this century to House of Miracles Christian Church, but then that congregation closed as well and the building will soon be auctioned.

The neighborhoods of the two churches are rather different. Lake Highland is located between the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport and East Lake Park. While the park is beautiful, the airport has grown and claimed some of Lake Highland’s former neighborhood.

But fortunes were different in 1941 as is suggested but the two structures different cornerstones. Lakewoods’s seems to be something of an amateur effort and to have been added after the building was complete. Lake Highland’s on the other hand is professional and on Alabama marble, the most elite choice in Birmingham for such stones at the time. It was in a more established neighborhood in 1941.
