Birmingham Churches and Their Cornerstones 121
New Rising Star Baptist Church is located in the Brown Springs neighborhood of Birmingham’s East Lake community. It is separated from other Brown Springs churches (including St. Paul A.M.E. Church East Lake and St. James Baptist Church East Lake) by Oporto-Madrid Boulevard, a major thoroughfare. The Star, as it now calls itself, is younger than these other churches, having been founded in 1963, and has grown to be a large church with multiple ministries.
Its current building was erected in 1992 and is located on the western side of London Avenue.

Its earlier L-shaped building is located across the street at the corner of London Avenue and 74th Street South. While its cornerstone was removed from this building and included in the walls of the new one it was retained by the church and used as a day care center. It has recently been renovated and renamed the Peggy Wynn Learning Center.
You can learn much more about The Star by visiting its webpage.

Map of Posts in this Project
Each site in this project is mapped below. Clicking on an icon will bring up a box with a link to the post on the site. Please use it to browse the collection. The color and shape of the location markers indicate the character of the cornerstones at each site. Stones like this, with multiple names and scripture or a dedicatory phrase are yellow. Since there is more than one name, a square maker is used. Click here for full information on the icons.
