Birmingham Churches and their Cornerstones 115
New St. James Baptist Church is located on the near west side of downtown Birmingham in the Smithfield neighborhood at 600 4th Avenue North. The church was organized in 1958 and erected this church just two years later in 1960 under pastor L. C. Fisher. The church building itself is like many in the area, but there is a distinctive small wide tower, presumably a chapel that makes the church a more remarkable presence. Protruding buttresses beside the church’s door and along the connection to the tower also suggest a certain intentionality about the design.
