Valley Christian Church

Birmingham Churches and Their Cornerstones 110

Valley Christian Church is a congregation of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) founded in Mountain Brook in 1951. It erected this church in 1961 off of Cherokee Road near the crest of Shades Mountain in 1961. It is one of four churches of very similar design by Charles McCauley. The others are All Saints’ Episcopal Church (1948), St., Barnabas Catholic Church (1952), and First Lutheran Church (1950).

The back of Valley Christian’s campus, and one of its signs, is visible from US-280, a major highway to Birmingham’s southwest suburbs. But the church itself is well off the beaten path.

Map of Posts in this Project

This is an interactive map. Clicking on any marker will enable you to access a link to the post of the church. The type of marker corresponds to the type of cornerstone at the site. Stones with dates and, at most, one individual’s name, like this, are light blue. Click here for full information on the markers.
