Birmingham Churches and their Cornerstones 86
Church cornerstones often record the names of many people involved in building the church. Many of these contributed to its erection. In the case of this East Birmingham building, the church itself is named for its primary builder.

The cornerstone lists the building committee and the stewards (that is, the official board of the church) and E. M. McElroy as the one who “erected” it. McElroy owned a local construction company, I believe. Originally the building had two name stones. One over the entrance of the church as well as the cornerstone pictured below. The stone over the door has been replaced or covered over. The building is now owned by Rhema Word Ministries which appears to have a good attendance at its Sunday services. It is located at 900 39th Street North.

The color and shape of the location markers indicate the character of the cornerstones at each site. Stones like this with multiple names are red. If there is more than one stone at the site a shape is used. Click here for full information on the icons.
