First Baptist Church Graymont

Birmingham Churches and Their Cornerstones 80

Birmingham has many congregations named First Baptist Church. This one, First Baptist Church Graymont, sits at 100 9th Court West, on the side of College Hills overlooking the city of Birmingham.

The church moved to this site from the Graymont neighborhood which is a few blocks to the south on the other side of Legion Field. The current complex of buildings includes three inscribed stones. The two on the sanctuary building provide a history of the church, which was founded in 1885, and include many names of leaders. As you can see in the photos below, one of the stones is on the front of the building, while a second, apparently later, polished stone is on the west side of the south-facing building. The one on the auxilllary building simply gives the dates of its erection.

For more information on the church’s history, see its the history on its website and its entry on Bhamwiki. Read this first post for more on this series on Birmingham churches and their cornerstones.

Map of Posts in this Project

Each site in this project is mapped below. Clicking on an icon will bring up a box with a link to the post on the site. Please use it to browse the collection.

The color and shape of the location markers indicate the character of the cornerstones at each site. Stones like this with a scripture verse, and not just names, are yellow. If there is more than one stone at the site, as here, the icon is a square. Click here for full information on the icons.
