Zion Star Missionary Baptist Church, Birmingham, Alabama

Birmingham Churches and Their Cornerstones 64

Zion Star Missionary Baptist Church is located at 254 3rd Avenue Southwest in Titusville. It is one of the many African American congregations that moved east from Birmingham’s southside in the 1960s and 1970s. In its case it had to move from its former site at 2611 4th Avenue South, because of the construction of the Red Mountain Expressway. It completed its current builidng in 1971. While no cornerstone from an earlier building is displayed on the front of the church. The old church bell sits on a steel platform so it can be rung.

Like many of the churches in its former neighborhood, the congregation was part of the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights, that was led by Fred Shuttlesworth and protested against segregation in Birmingham.
