Bethel Baptist Church is located at 2902 5th Ave North in Bessemer, AL, just a few blocks from where BLOX is prefabricating the next generation of Latter-day Saints temples, as I posted here last month. The building looks to date from the 1920s, it has been Bethel’s home since 1975.
Like many churches of its day, the worship space was placed on the second floor, above the Sunday school. The congregation ascends into the church by means of outside steps. Bethel has added a long ramp so that the stairs may be avoided, but the railings of the ramp partially obscure the cornerstone making it appear like it is behind bars.
