First Baptist Church, Roosevelt City

Birmingham Churches and Their Cornerstones 45

While traveling the Bessemer Super Highway (US-11) from Bessemer toward central Birmingham in Alabama, you’ll spy a stately mid-twentieth-century Romanesque Revival church on the right. It is the First Baptist Church of Roosevelt City. Earlier the church was located a block away on Patton Avenue.

Roosevelt City was a city within Jefferson County from 1967 to 1988. In 1972, with a population of 3,663, it promoted itself as the third-largest all-black city in the nation. After two decades of existence, it united with Birmingham, which then been governed by an African American mayor for just over a decade.

The inscribed stones pictured below are located on either side of the steps up from the street.
